Teeth Whitening Q & A

What causes dark or stained teeth?

Your teeth can grow dark or stained for many different reasons, with some of the most common including:

  • Smoking
  • Coffee or tea
  • Red wine
  • Certain medications, such as tetracycline
  • Over-use of fluoride during childhood

Aging can also cause teeth to grow darker. As you age, your enamel grows thinner and more vulnerable to discoloration from things like smoking or coffee.

How does professional in-office teeth whitening work?

Professional in-office teeth whitening means using professional grade products that can only be administered by a qualified dental care expert. The experienced care providers at Universal Dental Care offer the Zoom whitening system because it whitens teeth in only 30-45 minutes, depending on the option you choose.

Zoom QuickPro

The Zoom QuickPro system whitens teeth as much as four shades in only 30 minutes. Your dental care provider applies a layer of whitening solution to every tooth first, a process that takes only around 10 minutes.

Then, your care provider applies a protective sealant, and you can head home afterward. You simply brush the dried teeth whitening solution off your teeth after 30 minutes, and that's it!

Zoom WhiteSpeed

The other in-office Zoom option, Zoom WhiteSpeed, whitens teeth as much as eight shades in 45 minutes. For Zoom WhiteSpeed, your care provider applies whitening gel and then uses the WhiteSpeed lamp to accelerate the whitening.

You'll have three 15-minute sessions, all during the same visit. If you need additional whitening after three sessions, your care provider can do a fourth one for optimal results. You also get whitening gel to take home, so you can maintain your excellent results.

Discuss your whitening goals with your Universal Dental Care provider, so they can help you choose the in-office whitening option you need.

How does home teeth whitening work?

There are two Zoom options for home whitening, DayWhite and NiteWhite. The DayWhite system consists of trays and whitening gel that you use once a day for 30 minutes for two weeks.

The NiteWhite system is worn four to six hours a day minimum, and ideally overnight, for one to two weeks. Both can give you noticeable whitening, but results aren’t as dramatic as in-office treatments.
